Starting in 2020 in NCAA softball, the use of artificial noisemakers, musical instruments, air horns and electronic amplifiers by student-athletes and team personnel is prohibited in team areas. Previously this needed to be “brought to the attention of the umpire by the opposing coach.”
This created a problem where coaches needed to complain to the umpire before they were allowed to stop the “clanging and banging.”
Now going forward, the collegiate rule is consistent with the other rule sets and prohibits the banging of bats or balls in the dugout to generate noise. Of course clapping and cheering is always permitted, albeit sportsmanlike.
